Have you ever bathed a newborn? Your doula has and she can be there beside you with gentle guidance and reassurance. Is this your first time feeding a baby? With many years experience both breastfeeding and bottle feeding, we will help you find your favorite position or teach you how to get comfortable feeding your baby in bed. Why won’t your baby stop crying? A postpartum doula can teach you to recognize and soothe all of your baby’s cries.

Sometimes parents bring home their baby and are blissfully happy until sleep deprivation catches up. A doula can help you get back on track by tending to baby through the night while you sleep and bringing baby to you for feeds if you desire, managing light household chores and preparing meals while you bond with your little one or “sleep while baby sleeps”.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a postpartum doula?

Postpartum doulas provide information and support to new parents throughout the first year. Our doulas are trained to support you through infant feeding including breastfeeding and bottle feeding, guide you through all those big firsts (like baby’s first bath, baby’s first day out, and baby’s first visit to the doctor). Your postpartum doula is knowledgeable about infant care and postpartum recovery. A “Jill of all things new parent”, a postpartum doula is by your side every step of the way!

Why do I need a postpartum doula?

Even the most knowledgeable parent needs support. You only have two hands and your body is recovering from pregnancy and birth. A postpartum doula takes care of you emotionally and also manages tasks around your home to ensure your recovery is smooth. If that wasn’t enough, she’s basically a walking, talking encyclopedia of infant care and postpartum recovery!

Do I still need a postpartum doula if my family is coming (or nearby) to help?

Postpartum doulas do not replace the support of your loved ones. The relationship and care you get from family and friends is unique and important.

Postpartum doula care is different from family support. Your postpartum doula is a trained and experienced professional. She isn’t emotionally attached to your experience and offers unbiased support. Her advice is based on evidence which enables you to make decisions about your postpartum care and your baby that are right for you. You can confide in your postpartum doula and trust that she will support your decisions and not be insulted that you are making different decisions than she would make for herself.

As a hired professional, you don’t need to feel guilty if your postpartum doula is up through the night with your baby or if you need more support from her than you thought you would. At Chinook City Doulas, helping new parents have the experience they desire is our passion.

Postpartum doulas do not replace the support of your family, they enhance it!

How is a postpartum doula different from a baby nurse or night nanny?

Often clients come to us looking for a baby nurse or night nanny. While we certainly don’t mind (ok, we love) caring for your baby or babies through the night, we are not limited to infant care.

Our expertise expands upon that of a baby nurse or night nanny because we are postpartum specialists. We help clients feel confident and cared for around the clock in all areas of their lives after a baby is born.

What if I only need a little bit of help after my baby is born?

Our postpartum doulas can be booked for as few as four hours or around the clock. We customise our support based on your needs.

We’ve worked with clients who just needed a little support a few days a week and provided live in postpartum care, too. Talk to us about your needs and budget!

What is my postpartum doula is sick or unavailable when I need her?

The beauty of working with an agency lies in the availability. You can count on us to always have a doula available, as long as you give us at least 24 hours notice.

For homebirth clients or clients who return home from the hospital less than 24 hours post birth, we will accommodate your needs to have a postpartum doula available to you at your earliest request.

My postpartum doula says my baby is too old and I don't need a postpartum doula any more. Can Chinook City Doulas help?

We don’t believe in putting postpartum recovery on a schedule. We work with families as long as they need support (usually up to one-year post birth). If your current postpartum doula limits her support to 12 weeks, we can pick up where she left off.

How much does postpartum doula care cost?

Our postpartum doula rates start at $35.00 per hour.

Do you offer a discount if I purchase more hours for postpartum care in advance?

We do!

Starting at 100 hours, we are able to offer a reduced rate to clients who purchase a higher number of hours.
