You have a right to accept or decline any test, procedure, medication, etc, that you are offered. But should you just say no?

At Chinook City Doulas, we encourage our clients to say YES! Let me explain…

It begins before you are pregnant.

SAY YES TO A FAMILY DOCTOR YOU TRUST.

Do you have a family doctor, or a clinic that you regularly go to when you need medical care? Are you confident that when you seek care from your doctor you will be given accurate information and expert advice?

You should be.

If you do not view your family doctor as an expert on your health, you need to find a different doctor. What is the point of seeking professional care if you’re not going to feel safe taking the advice you are given?

SAY YES TO A MIDWIFE, OBGYN, OR MATERNAL CARE CLINIC WHOSE OPINION AND EXPERTISE YOU VALUE.

Your doctor or midwife is your guide for all things medical, related to your pregnancy. It’s vital that you are comfortable with them and respect their advice. Contrary to common belief, you do not have to work with the first primary care provider you are referred to.

As you may already know, midwives are hard to come by in Alberta, due to a shortage of funding. If you would like midwifery care, you need to submit a Request for Care, even if there are no midwives in your area.

Often, your family doctor will refer you to a practice that focuses on maternal health. You may be referred to an obstetrician, especially if your pregnancy is high risk. If for any reason you do not feel that you can put your life, and the life of your unborn child, in this person’s hands, you need to go back to the family doctor you trust. Explain your concerns to them and either request a different referral or find out if your family doctor can help to ease your fears or facilitate communication between you and your pregnancy care provider.

We recommend you make a decision about your care provider early in your pregnancy. This way, you will have more options available to you.

SAY YES TO MORE INFORMATION.

If a care provider offers you a test, procedure or treatment that you are not comfortable with, ask for more information. You may find that by asking questions to better understand the benefits and risks, you develop an understanding of why your care provider is making the recommendation he/she is.

Our clients come to us looking for resources and information regarding their choices. We seek reliable peer reviewed studies when providing information but find it equally important to facilitate communication between clients and their doctor or midwife. After acquiring more information, you may be prepared to say yes, or you may be more resolved as to why you would like to say no. Be confident in making the decision that is best for your family, regardless of who agrees with you.

SAY YES TO THE B.R.A.I.N. ACRONYM.

The B.R.A.I.N. acronym is a tool commonly used in the birth industry to assist with decision making. By working through the benefits, risks, alternatives, what your intuition is telling you, choosing to do nothing or request more time to make a decison you can better navigate your experience. We have a handy B.R.A.I.N. acronym printable you can take with you to the hospital when you go into labor.

SAY YES TO BUILDING A BIRTH TEAM YOU CAN COUNT ON.

Doctors and nurses dedicate their lives to the health and wellness of others. It’s OK if you do not choose to say yes to the first care provider you meet. We have many wonderful health care providers in Calgary. Build a birth team you feel safe and comfortable with!
