If this isn’t your first time on a doula website you’ve already heard the whole “A doula provides physical support, emotional support and educational support …” But what does that even mean? Support? There are doulas who don’t even know.
Chinook City Doulas wants you to know exactly what we are talking about when we say support. This is Part One of our Three-Part Series on the different types of support you receive from your CCD doula.
Physical support from your doula is about compassionate touch and helping you meet your physical needs during labor and birth.
Your skin has a multitude of sensory receptors that respond to touch, contact, temperature, pain, and more. Touch is powerful stuff. Psychology Today has a fantastic article about the language of touch.
“TOO OFTEN WE UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A TOUCH, A SMILE, A KIND WORD OR A LISTENING EAR, AN HONEST COMPLIMENT OR THE SMALLEST ACT OF CARING ALL OF WHICH HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO TURN A LIFE AROUND. ” – LEO BUSAGLIA
Massage is a form of touch that can be exceptionally helpful to you not only in labor but throughout your pregnancy. Studies have shown that when women are massaged in pregnancy and labor, their labor is shortened and they are less likely to suffer from Postpartum Depression.
Physical support also includes counter pressure, compassionate touch (back rubbing, hugging, hand holding), position changes and reminding you to manage your basic physical needs, like eating, drinking and using the bathroom.
At Chinook City Doulas, we believe in the power of touch. We attune with you to provide you with the physical support you need throughout childbirth. In addition, our knowledge of pregnancy and birth allows us to know exactly when you might benefit from a specific type of physical support. Schedule a consultation to find out why a Chinook City Doula is the doula for you.
