When it comes to your one and only irreplaceable placenta, you need to know it is handled and processed in a safe manner that will result in the highest quality of capsules, tincture, salve or other product. You need to be certain your placenta encapsulation professional is taking all the necessary steps to ensure you and your family are safe throughout the process.

WHEN INGESTING YOUR PLACENTA, THE RISKS ARE THE RESULT OF IMPROPER STORAGE, PREPARATION THAT DOES NOT FOLLOW FOOD SAFETY STANDARDS AND SUB-PAR SANITIZATION PROCEDURES.

In our previous post, Questions to Ask Your Placenta Professional, we address the most pressing questions you should be asking when looking for some one to prepare your placenta capsules. Today we share several other important points to consider when choosing a placenta encapsulator.

DO YOU HAVE LIABILITY INSURANCE COVERAGE?

There are placenta professionals who believe liability insurance is completely unnecessary. I have been told by Calgary “placenta professionals” that preparing a placenta is much like making cookies for a bake sale. Obviously, one does not require insurance coverage for bake sale cookies.

At Chinook City Doulas, we know preparing your placenta is NOT comparable to baking cookies. Cookies are not an irreplaceable human organ. Cookies are not a bio-hazard containing possible bloodborne pathogens. Furthermore, Chinook City Doulas is a business NOT a bake sale. No one on our team is willing to take a chance with their livelihood or their family’s financial security by  performing services without liability insurance, no matter how careful we know ourselves to be.

Your peace of mind, health, and safety should be your placenta specialist’s number one priority. Insurance not only means that if something goes wrong you can be compensated but most importantly, that an insurance provider was willing to take the risk of insuring the person encapsulating your placenta. Insurance companies are not gamblers, they assume smart risk. By investing in insurance coverage your placenta encapsulation professional shows that she takes her business seriously and isn’t going to cut corners, act unreliably or unprofessionally. In order to qualify for liability insurance, we were required to submit proof of all training and certifications the insurance provider deems acceptable. We also submitted detailed accounts of our sanitization policies and procedures for approval.

CONSIDER LEARNING MORE ABOUT THEIR SANITIZATION PROCEDURES:

It’s easy to forget about the risk of bloodborne pathogens when ingesting your placenta through placenta encapsulation. It’s your organ, from your body, right? You can’t get a bloodborne illness from yourself.

What people forget is that there are several tools and pieces of equipment that a placenta encapsulation professional uses for every client. That means that when she comes to prepare your placenta in the afternoon, some one else’s placenta may have been in contact with her equipment that morning and another could come in contact with it tomorrow. Knives, pots, grinders, capsule machines, and dehydrating equipment all require sanitization based on bloodborne pathogen regulations. The safest placenta encapsulation begins with proper training, including up-to-date Bloodborne Pathogens Certification and Postpartum Placenta Specialist Certification with a respected training organization like ProDoula. Don’t be afraid to  ask for proof of these certifications!

When it comes to sanitization the only acceptable method is soaking in bleach solution or commercial sanitizer. It is acceptable for the placenta encapsulation professional to perform a pre-sanitization (spraying the equipment thoroughly with bleach/commercial disinfecting solution) in the clients home prior to returning to her own work space for complete sanitization. All other methods are inferior. While autoclave-style heat sterilization sounds very professional, much of the equipment used to encapsulate your placenta is too large to fit in an autoclave or pressure canner and other items are  plastic and would not withstand the heat required to sterilize the item (although I must admit, the equipment sure looks fancy in medical sterilization packaging). If your professional uses vinegar, Norwex cloths, or other natural products only – RUN AWAY NOW. Vinegar and other “natural” methods of disinfecting do not kill HIV or Hepatitis that may be lurking on her equipment from a previous client.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE SICK OR UNAVAILABLE WHEN I HAVE MY BABY?

Placenta encapsulation professionals get sick and have family emergencies just like everyone else. So what happens if your placenta encapsulation professional gets the flu or her grandmother passes away in another province? Is there another placenta specialist she works with that will be available to provide services to you? Will this third party be committed to serving you? Is this person as qualified as the professional you are hiring is? Can you see copies of this other persons certificates and discuss the processes and procedures they follow?

When you work with Chinook City Doulas for your placenta encapsulation in Calgary, you don’t have to worry about interviewing multiple placenta encapsulation professionals to hire one. We have a team of Certified Postpartum Placenta Specialists that have been trained by respected placenta encapsulated training organization, ProDoula. Each member of our team has up-to-date Bloodeborne Pathogens Certification, liability insurance coverage and standardized training. We guarantee one of the top Postpartum Placenta Specialists in Calgary will be available to encapsulate your placenta when your baby is born.

MAY WE SEE REVIEWS OR CONTACT REFERENCES?

References and reviews are great. They show that others have had such a good experience with your service provider that they are willing to take the time to share that experience and endorse the service they received. Ask your prospective placenta encapsulation professional where you may find past client reviews of her services!

You can check out a few of our client reviews on our Facebook page or contact us for copies of client evaluations, or references.
