I am often asked how or why I decided to become a postpartum doula. When I was doing some research I came across “birth doulas”. I began to look further into what a doula is and does. I quickly realized that the work of a doula is not just specific to birth but also postpartum. When reading the description of what a postpartum doula does everything felt and rang true for me.

THIS CAREER EMBODIES WHO I AM AND WHAT I BELIEVE IN.

Once I set onto my journey to becoming a postpartum doula, ProDoula (a doula training and certification organization) presented itself to me and their philosophies fit with everything that I believe in; Support, nonjudgmental and unbiased.
If you have previously been introduced to the doula stereotype you may be confused when you meet me. I am not a hippy, a naturopath or homeopath. I do not have a preference for whether you breastfeed or bottle feed, or for any specific parenting philosophy. I am also not an activist for natural birth or medicated birth. I have experienced both and neither left me feeling any less or more of a woman.

What I am is a mother of two beautiful boys whom I am raising according to how I feel works best for me and embodies my personal beliefs and I believe others should do the same. ProDoula has taught me that my personal opinions are not relevant for the family next door to me or my future clients; as we each search for and identify the philosophies that feel right for us.

SO HERE IS MY EXERCISE FOR YOU: CLOSE YOUR EYES JUST FOR A MINUTE AND TAKE A DEEP BREATH, HOW DOES BEING FULLY SUPPORTED LOOK AND FEEL FOR YOU?

Wouldn’t it be incredible to have just one person telling what a great job you are doing rather than offering advice? How does it feel to be able to focus on your needs and the needs of your family while someone else ensures you are all fed nutritious meals and the laundry is caught up? What would it be like to need information and resources and be able to have an expert right there with you? How would you thrive with infant feeding support right there in your home for the early days of learning to care for your newborn? Imagine getting a full night of rest while your newborn’s needs are gently met just a few steps away.

CAN YOU PICTURE A POSTPARTUM DOULA BY YOUR SIDE SUPPORTING YOU THROUGH YOUR BABY’S FIRST YEAR?

If so, I would love to be that doula, to guide you through the milestones of your baby’s first year and validate your decisions and choices. I will not steer you towards a right or wrong choice; as there is no such thing. There are only choices that are unique to each family, parent, couple.  Making the best decision for your family will empower you and make you feel that much more confident, because it was YOUR choice.
