Sometimes our work as doulas is difficult to define. Our tasks are dictated by our client’s preferences, circumstances and goals. We often find ourselves trying to find comparable roles to paint a picture for people. I’ve heard some pretty ridiculous explanations (In fact, I’ve used some ridiculous explanations, who am I kidding?):

“…like your mother but without all those pesky opinions!”
“An experienced friend that knows about birth to be by your side”.

None of these really got the job done, until I came across a Facebook post last week by Billie Harrigan, Director of Education for Childbirth International and a doula herself.

“I’VE BEEN TRYING TO UNDERSTAND SPORTS.
A CADDY IS A GOLF DOULA. I GET THAT.”
– BILLIE HARRIGAN

First of all, people golf without caddies all the time. A caddy is not necessary to play a good game but if you want to play your best game, you get yourself a caddy.  Doulas are the same. You can have a great birth without a doula but if you want to have a birth equivalent to the U.S. Open, hire a doula!
