Birth is unpredictable. Often a birth is thought to be successful if mom is healthy and baby is healthy. However, the physical health of mom and baby are not all that should be considered.
Birth is also about how mom feels during the process. These feelings paint how her birth will be remembered for the rest of her life.
With increased stress on medical centers and the sheer unpredictability of birth, it is not guaranteed that medical staff can give longstanding individual care to every client that is in labor with hands on continuous support.
STEP ONE: TAKE SOME TIME TO TALK AND PLAN WITH YOUR PARTNER ABOUT WHAT IS AND ISN’T IMPORTANT TO EACH OF YOU DURING LABOR AND BIRTH.
It can be an image of how you see yourself in labor, it can be a parenting style you see yourself growing into, or it can be a particular element of labor you have strong feelings about.
The point is to have a start, and as you learn more, talk with your provider more or change your mind, you can help your partner be on the same page by getting expectations out in the open.
STEP TWO: FIND A CARE PROVIDER THAT LISTENS TO YOUR DESIRES FOR YOUR BIRTH, AND WORKS TOWARDS MAKING THOSE HOPES POSSIBLE.
If you are up front about how you would like to labor, your care provider can be upfront about the likelihood of those desires being met. For instance, getting to the hospital in active labor is the worst time to find out your water birth can’t happen because there is no tub.
HAVE THE SUPPORT YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR PLAN WORK FOR YOU.
Sometimes this means taking childbirth education classes. Sometimes this is asking a trusted non-judgmental relative come support you and your partner in labor. Sometimes this is hiring a professional to provide support. You and your partner should feel confident in choosing what’s best for your family.
These three steps seem simple, however many families overlook them. Pregnancy and birth are the beginnings of learning how to care completely for another person.
You deserve to have your unique experience with people who can help you bring to life the goals you have in mind. If doula care is right for you, Chinook City Doulas will be able to help with any part of labor and postpartum support.
